SUMMARY:Webinar: Play\, Participation & Poverty
DESCRIPTION:Play\, participation & poverty:\n– How our policies can create fairer\, healthier futures for children & young people \nWith Anti-Poverty Week and Children’s Week both falling in October\, NAPCAN is taking a look at the important overlap between the themes of the two weeks: child poverty and play. \nThis fresh conversation will build on what we already know… that:\n– activities like outdoor play\, organised sport\, dance and drama outside of school are good for the future health of all children\n– the benefits are greatest for young people who commonly have the least access to these activities (ie from lower-income families)\n– our policies have the power to remove many of the barriers that lock people out of opportunities to play and participate\n– fantastic local examples are providing insight into simple smart investments that are creating fairer\, more protective communities for children. \nWe’ll hear from passionate researchers and advocates on the topic:\n– Dr Alex O’Donnell from the University of Tasmania will share his research about how extracurricular activities benefit children and young people\, including new research about impacts on mental health\n– Sally Weir from the Department of Territory Families\, Housing and Communities\, Northern Territory Government and Rachel Fosdick\, the Board Secretary and Founder of Palmerston and Regional Basketball Association\, will talk about the Palmerston Youth Activities Programs and the benefits that are being seen when young people are connected to activities in fair and equal ways.\n– Hyahno Moser founder of the Australian Institute of Play\, will share his decades of experience promoting access to outdoor neighbourhood play including in organisations such as Nature Play and Logan Together\, Qld. \nThis will be an engaging conversation for anyone who works with children or youth\, or who is interested in creating smart evidence-based policies (including at federal\, state\, local levels) to give every child in every community a fair go. \nMonday 23 October 2023\n2pm AEDT\n1pm AEST\n12.30pm NT \nRegister here\nhttps://napcan-org-au.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_14gCPEs-T0CZ8P99M2u5Ew

SUMMARY:Policing Insecurity: Debt\, Fraud\, Data and the Automated Welfare State - a public lecture by Professor Virginia Eubanks
DESCRIPTION:About this event \nMany of the digital risk prediction systems integrated into Unemployment\, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)\, Supplemented Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)\, and other social insurance programs in the United States over the last two decades promised to reduce waste and abuse by stopping fraud before it starts. In reality\, these systems are increasingly used to tunnel through decades-old program data\, looking for alleged overpayments that are then converted into debt for collection by the federal Treasury Offset Program (TOP). \nThis talk compares the RoboDebt case in Australia to current practice in the United States\, drawing on collaborative work with the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) to shed light on the political implications of punitive debt production in six states. \nThe public lecture will be followed by light refreshments. \nAbout the Speaker \nProfessor Virginia Eubanks is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University at Albany\, SUNY. She is the author of Automating Inequality: How High-Tech Tools Profile\, Police\, and Punish the Poor; Digital Dead End: Fighting for Social Justice in the Information Age; and co-editor\, with Alethia Jones\, of Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around: Forty Years of Movement Building with Barbara Smith. Her investigative reporting and personal essays have appeared in The New York Times Magazine\, Scientific American\, The Nation\, Harper’s\, and Wired. With Andrea Quijada\, she is gathering oral histories of the global automated welfare state for Voice of Witness. She is a 2022 scholar-in-residence at the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC).

SUMMARY:Is Australia The Lucky Country for all?
DESCRIPTION:1 in 6 Australian children aged 10 to 14 years\, that’s 774\,00 children\, lived in poverty in 2017-18. The percentage of children living in poverty is higher than the percentage of any other age group\, including those aged 65 years and over. For these children\, Australia is far from being a lucky country. \nDuring this Anti-Poverty Week\, we are calling on all our Parliamentarians to commit to halving child poverty by 2030. This year is the 20th anniversary of Australia’s Anti-Poverty Week. Join us in acknowledging this milestone by attending our panel discussion\, ‘Is Australia the lucky country for all?”. \nOur Panellists: \nCommissioner Natalie Lewis\nA Gamilaraay woman and Queensland Family and Child Commissioner. Natalie is fiercely committed to progressing a transformational reform agenda to ensure that children’s rights and entitlements are upheld in Queensland and nationally. Can freedom from poverty be regarded as one of these rights? \nDr Sharon Bessell\nSharon Bessell is a Professor at the Crawford School of Public Policy at The Australian National University and director of the Children’s Policy Centre\, and of the Poverty and Inequality Research Centre. She is recognised internationally as a leader in rights-based\, child-centred research methodologies\, and is currently leading research on the development of a child-centred framework for assessing multidimensional child poverty. \nCath Bartolo AM\nFor around two decades\, Cath Bartolo AM has been the Chief Executive Officer of Youth and Family Services\, a not-for-profit community organisation based in Logan delivering a range of services including housing\, domestic and family violence support\, children\, youth and family services\, and legal and financial counselling. There are few who so closely understand the impact of poverty on children\, young people and their families. \nFacilitator\nPaul Barclay\nA Walkley Award winner\, Paul Barclay is a regular host and presenter on ABC Radio National’s Big Ideas\, a program he has hosted since at least 2003. We are delighted that Paul will be facilitating the panel and look forward to hearing the discussion broadcast on Radio National. \nTo register: Click here to register via Eventbrite \nThank you\nCo-Chairs of the Queensland Anti-Poverty Week Committee (NAPCAN’s Helen Fogarty and PeakCare’s Lindsay Wegener) and all members of the Committee sincerely thank:\nOur venue host: The Hon. SUMMARY:What Informal Kinship Carers Need\, What They Really Really Need: Kinship Care Forum IV
DESCRIPTION:Around 50\,000 children and young people in Queensland live in informal kinship care with grandparents\, aunts\, uncles\, brothers\, sisters\, cousins\, and other relatives to keep them out of the child protection system. \nInformal Kinship Carers make significant sacrifices including postponing retirement\, withdrawing their superannuation\, changing careers\, disrupting relationships and being forced into poverty. \nThese carers fall between the cracks of Federal and State Governments and receive little or no financial or other support to for children in their care.\nOn Wednesday 20 October\, PeakCare hosts the fourth Kinship Care Forum and asks the question – What Informal Kinship Carers need\, what they really\, really need? \nIt happens during Anti-Poverty Week with local\, national\, and international speakers including from the UK and NZ to shine a light on the needs of carers and children.
