SUMMARY:St Vincent de Paul Society NSW's Rosalie Rendu Forum
DESCRIPTION:Re-imaginging the future: Can we create more equitable communities post pandemic? \nOver recent months\, the strength and resilience of our communities has been tested. First floods\, drought and fires\, and now a global pandemic have exposed the flaws in the social and economic systems that should be designed to protect even the most vulnerable among us. 0ut of crisis\, however\, comes opportunity. Together\, we can achieve an Australia that doesn’t merely return to normal\, but embodies the compassion and justice we strive to live out every day as Vincentians. \nThis year\, we are honoured to have Geraldine Doogue\, journalist\, radio and television presenter hosting our Rosalie Rendu Forum\, alongside Jody Broun\, Chief Executive and Executive Director of the Aboriginal Housing Office\, Kirsty Robinson\, CEO of Caritas Australia\, and Nicki Hutley\, Partner from Deloitte who will be panel speakers on the night. \nPlease join us at our 2020 Rosalie Rendu Forum to hear from Jody\, Kirsty and Nicki as they discuss the social\, economic and environmental consequences of COVID-19\, and consider how we can re-imagine a more equitable Australia. \nRosalie Rendu Forum 2020 will be held as a webinar on Thursday 15 October at 6pm. Registrations are now open via the following link: https://rosalie-rendu-2020.eventbrite.com.au

SUMMARY:Tackling child poverty in the wake of COVID-19: Priorities for Australia’s social security and family payments systems
DESCRIPTION:As the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to ramify across communities\, the number of children and families living in poverty is set to escalate. \nBefore the pandemic\, rates of child poverty in Australia were already stubbornly high\, with more than one in six children living below the poverty line. In the 1980s Australia led the world in implementing measures to guard against child poverty\, reducing it by over 30 per cent through reforms to the family payments system. These reforms\, however\, have been steadily unwound over the past two decades\, with a succession of cuts to family payments and decisions to slash social security payments to low-income families. \nThis webinar brings together a panel of speakers to examine child poverty in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic\, with a particular focus on the role of social security and family payments in alleviating child poverty. The webinar will consider some of the key factors contributing to high levels of child poverty in Australia\, the implications of the pandemic-induced recession\, and the political enablers and policy reforms needed to drive a new national effort to tackle child poverty in Australia. \nSpeakers:\n• The Reverend the Honourable Professor Brian Howe AO\n• Professor Miranda Stewart\, Melbourne University Law School\n• Terese Edwards\, National Council of Single Mothers and their Children\n• The Honourable Bronwyn Pike\, CEO of Uniting Vic. Tas\, VIC APW 2020 Co-Chair \nThis webinar will be recorded and uploaded to our website as a captioned video and transcript. \nPlease note\, times are in AEDT.

SUMMARY:Home is Where the Heart is: The Link Between Poverty\, Housing\, and Health
DESCRIPTION:The facts\nSecure and affordable housing is critical to overcoming many of the economic\, social and chronic disease challenges facing rural and remote Australians\, particularly chronic diseases closely related to housing such as rheumatic heart disease. \nPeople in rural and remote Australia have lower incomes\, lower net household worth\, higher instances of risk factors for poor health\, higher levels of chronic disease\, accidents and injury\, and reduced life expectancy. \nA key challenge for people living in poverty is access to appropriate\, secure and affordable housing. Living in inappropriate\, poor and insecure housing leads to many adverse health outcomes related to stress\, poor nutrition\, accidents\, falls and communicable diseases. As a recent Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute report notes\, the private housing market fails to decently and affordably accommodate people on low incomes or facing other forms of disadvantage. \nTwo-thirds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians live outside major cities. A critical factor in improving health outcomes for Indigenous Australians is the provision and maintenance of appropriate housing. For example\, crowded housing can contribute to the increased burden of disease in children including Otitis media – which can result in permanent hearing loss – and Strep A infection\, which can lead to rheumatic fever and the devastating effects of rheumatic heart disease. \nWho should attend?\nThe webinar is open to anyone\, but particularly those interested in the critical role secure housing plays in the health\, and economic and social wellbeing\, of low-income Australians; the importance of appropriate housing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians; the effect of the current recession on people in economic hardship\, particularly in rural Australia; and how to overcome the devastating effects of rheumatic heart disease on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. \nPanellists\nDr Richard Denniss: Chief Economist\, The Australia Institute; Prof Fran Baum Director\, Southgate Institute for Health\, Society and Equity; Dr Katharine Noonan: Head of Strategy\, END RHD\, Telethon Kids Institute and Michael Klerck\,Tangentyere Council Aboriginal Corporation. \nFacilitator\nDr Gabrielle O’Kane: Chief Executive Officer\, National Rural Health Alliance
