SUMMARY:CCYP Quotes About Poverty from Young People in SA
DESCRIPTION:A series of social media tiles on issues identified by children on the impact of poverty on their lives. One tile will be posted each day throughout APW featuring a quote from a young person aged 8 – 12 years who told their Commissioner what matter to them most was an issue related to poverty. The quotes are drawn from the Commissioner’s annual Student Voice Postcard initiative in which South Australian children in years 2 – 6 are invited to write to their Commissioner Helen Connolly and tell them what matters to them most. Last year the Commissioner received more than 13\,680 responses which were analysed and summarised in a report titled “The Things That Matter 3” which can be downloaded from the following website: https://commissionerspostcards.com.au/

SUMMARY:Life Course Centre Webinar: ‘Never Let a Crisis go to Waste: Opportunities to Reduce Social Disadvantage from COVID-19’
DESCRIPTION:The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Children and Families over the Life Course is proud to be a sponsor of Anti-Poverty Week \nPlease join Life Course Centre Chief Investigators this Anti-Poverty Week for a panel discussion about Opportunities to Reduce Social Disadvantage from COVID-19 \nIn the midst of a global crisis that has upended almost all aspects of how we live and work\, a life course approach turns attention to the long-term impacts of the pandemic. While it is too early to outline these impacts with any confidence\, what we can do at this stage is reflect on the opportunities that COVID-19 presents for examining some of the long-standing\, taken-for-granted rules and regulations about living and working. \nIn the paper\, ‘Never Let a Crisis Go to Waste: Opportunities to Reduce Social Disadvantage from COVID-19’\, Life Course Centre researchers present ideas on potential opportunities for rethinking\, redesigning and reworking social policies to address disadvantage. This provides an optimistic\, forward-looking counterpoint to what has undoubtedly been a catastrophic global social\, health and economic event. \nIn this special webinar to coincide with Anti-Poverty Week\, Life Course Centre Chief Investigators will discuss opportunities arising from COVID-19 to address long-standing inequalities in Australia in areas such as health\, the tax and transfer system\, labour markets and gender. There will be other pandemics and other global shocks. What we learn\, and do\, today will have significant bearing on future preparations and responses. This webinar will discuss some of the ways we might leverage the COVID-19 crisis to build back a better and fairer society for all.

SUMMARY:What Informal Kinship Carers Need\, What They Really Really Need: Kinship Care Forum IV
DESCRIPTION:Around 50\,000 children and young people in Queensland live in informal kinship care with grandparents\, aunts\, uncles\, brothers\, sisters\, cousins\, and other relatives to keep them out of the child protection system. \nInformal Kinship Carers make significant sacrifices including postponing retirement\, withdrawing their superannuation\, changing careers\, disrupting relationships and being forced into poverty. \nThese carers fall between the cracks of Federal and State Governments and receive little or no financial or other support to for children in their care.\nOn Wednesday 20 October\, PeakCare hosts the fourth Kinship Care Forum and asks the question – What Informal Kinship Carers need\, what they really\, really need? \nIt happens during Anti-Poverty Week with local\, national\, and international speakers including from the UK and NZ to shine a light on the needs of carers and children.
