SUMMARY:Webinar: Families Under Extreme Stress Factors associated with meal provision in early care and education (ECE) services
DESCRIPTION:Nutrition in childhood is a key environmental factor affecting ongoing health and wellbeing across the life course. Early nutrition is associated with ongoing weight status\, risk of chronic disease and quality of life. Poor nutrition\, whether in terms of quantity or quality of food accessed\, is strongly implicated in population health costs\, both human and economic. \nProfessor Karen Thorpe’s research team is assessing the way in which the competitive economic market of Early Care and Education programs are associated with mealtime provision across communities with varying risk for food insecurity. \nJoin us for a presentation followed by Q&A. \nPlease note\, times are in AEDT.

SUMMARY:Webinar - Jay Weatherill: The Challenges of Early Years Reform
DESCRIPTION:Until we acknowledge the importance of the early years to lifelong learning\, health\, and emotional outcomes\, reform will continue to be hidden behind a fog of confused responsibilities\, incoherent government arrangements\, and disconnected from the realities of family life. Services\, particularly in relation to early learning\, will continue to be unaffordable\, inaccessible\, and of variable quality. \nA superficial overview of structures relating to early childhood point to five disconnected systems: childcare\, preschool\, children’s health\, family and community services\, and child protection. And in these respective five systems\, there are five associated problems: unaffordable services of variable standards\, disconnected\, inaccessible\, ad hoc\, and unaccountable. \nFew would dispute the system needs reform. The evidence suggests it should be a priority. Under such circumstances\, the logical conclusion is that the government would act. This is inconsistent\, however\, with the nature of politics. Governments of all persuasions are confronted with a range of competing priorities – and will only take on challenging reform there is a strong movement for change demanding actions. \nOur role\, therefore\, is to make early childhood development an issue that is impossible to ignore. This is not a simple matter. Like other sectors\, the many impressive actors\, organisations\, and advocates devoted to early childhood have not always coalesced around a common objective. \nThis year\, however\, it is clear that a campaign is building in which many voices deliver one message: the need for change is real\, immediate\, irrefutable. \nJoin Jay to hear about the Thrive By Five Campaign working to ensure every child\, and every family\, can access quality\, affordable early education and care\, and how you can get involved. \nSummary\nTitle: Webinar – Jay Weatherill: The challenges of early years reform\nDate: Tuesday\, 13 October 2020\nTime: 1.00pm-2.00pm AEDT\nPrice: Free of charge\nRegister: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/280859660013820685

SUMMARY:Northern Territory Webinar: Everybody’s Home
DESCRIPTION:Residents of the Northern Territory experience the highest rates of homelessness in the nation. Housing disadvantage is inextricably linked to poverty\, with adverse implications for educational\, health and employment outcomes. \nHosted by NT Council of Social Service and NT Shelter for Anti-Poverty Week 2020.   Peter McMillan\, NT Shelter Executive Officer\, will highlight the importance of the Everybody’s Home campaign and its relevance in the context of the Northern Territory’s unique housing challenges. He will draw the connection between the ongoing existence and impacts of poverty in the Northern Territory and the lack of social and affordable housing\, and outline why it makes both social and economic sense to build more housing now. Peter will also set-out a path for how the Northern Territory can ensure all residents have access to safe\, secure and affordable housing while supporting the building and construction sector to get the job done. \nBefore the event you will be sent the zoom login details to your registered email address. \nWe will be taking questions during the webinar via the chat box but if you already have a specific question in mind please forward to admin@ntcoss.org.au and we will aim to have it answered for you. \nThe event begins at 2:00pm (ACST) or 3:30pm (AEDT).
