SUMMARY:Red Carpet Screening: Half a Million Steps
DESCRIPTION:In October 2018\, as part of Uniting’s Fair Treatment campaign\, 100 people walked the 500\,000 steps from Dubbo\, in Western NSW\, to deliver a message to NSW Parliament in Sydney – highlighting how far a person in regional NSW may have to travel to reach the drug treatment they need. \nThis Long Walk to Treatment has now been made into a powerful and moving documentary telling the personal stories behind a movement to reform drug laws and policy and make treatment available to all\, breaking the cycle of entrenched poverty that often sits alongside drug addiction. \nThis is a free public screening\, with refreshments available from 6pm\, screening at 6:45pm and a short Q&A session to follow.

SUMMARY:Putting Regional Needs on the Map
DESCRIPTION:NCOSS invites you to join us on Thursday\, 24 October for a breakfast event where you will hear directly from a broad coalition of voices to discuss the common concern of economic disadvantage across NSW. \nThis is an invaluable opportunity to hear from guest speaker\, journalist and author of ‘Rusted Off – Why Country Australia is Fed Up’ Gabrielle Chan. With over 30 years of journalism experience\, Gabrielle has lived in both regional and metro NSW\, experiencing firsthand the cultural and economic divide. \nWe will also be launching the ‘Mapping Economic Disadvantage in NSW’ report undertaken by NCOSS in conjunction with the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM). \nThe ‘Putting Regional Needs on the Map’ event is a rare occasion that brings together individuals from regional and metro social service organisations\, academics\, individuals\, corporate organisations and local and state government representatives. This will allow attendees the chance to build connections that may otherwise be hindered by distance and build lasting relationships to build the city/ country divide. \nCheck out the full list of panelists here.

SUMMARY:Rally Against Poverty
DESCRIPTION:Our social security system is failing to support people living in poverty. At the same time\, the Federal Government seeks to make it harder to access and increasingly nastier\, tightly controlling the lives of those struggling to survive on its meagre entitlements. \nWe say this isn’t good enough! \nIt’s time to raise the rate of Newstart. It’s time we had a social security system that actually supported people out of poverty\, rather than punished them. \nJoin us on Sunday\, October 20 in Perth to demand change. \nWe are pleased to announce that we will be joined by Nijole Naujokas – writer and activist with the Australian Unemployed Workers’ Union! \nMore speakers to be announced.

SUMMARY:Poverty In The Hunter
DESCRIPTION:Very few people or groups are absent from the affects of poverty or the near poverty experience. \nWorkers\, Women\, disabled\, students\, unemployed\, pensioners\, injured workers\, families\, single parents… We all know someone worse off. \nThe working poor\, the need to ‘raise the rate’\, cost of living pressures\, the consequences of privatisation of our services\, medicare co-payments and the stripping of public education funding including TAFE and University. These are all issues that need fixing or we will only see more and more people continue to fall below the poverty line. \nBy focusing on our similarities and not our differences will we be able to tackle the inequities in our system that assures poverty continues. \nUnity across our communities is essential in identifying and highlighting our common experience\, and Unity in our efforts to combat the root cause’s and providing the solutions so that all in our communities can plan for a dignified and prosperous future. \nTogether\, We are Stronger!

SUMMARY:Raise the Rate Forum
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speakers:\n+ Hon Jackie Trad MP\, Deputy Premier\, Treasurer and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships\n+ Dr Cassandra Goldie\, CEO Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) \nEvent Details:\nFree event\n10.30am – 12.30pm\nFriday 18 October 2019\nKurilpa Hall\, 174 Boundary Street\, West End Q 4101 \nPlease book your seat via eventbrite: http://raisetherateforum.eventbrite.com.au/ \n… \nIn a wealthy country like Australia\, we should all have enough to put a roof over our head and food on the table. However\, more than three quarters of a million people in communities across Australia live on unemployment and student payments that do not cover the cost of housing\, food\, transport and healthcare.1 \nWhat the Federal Government needs to do:\n• Increase the single rates of Newstart\, Youth Allowance and related payments by $75 per week to reduce poverty and inequality in Australia.\n• Index payments to wages as well as CPI\nto ensure they maintain pace with community living standards.\n• Increase Commonwealth Rent Assistance by 30% or $20 per week for a single person on Newstart. \nThese measures would help people afford food and housing\, reduce homelessness\, destitution and the need for charity. They would improve people’s wellbeing\, security and health. \nRaising the rate would benefit entire communities.

SUMMARY:Poverty Simulation
DESCRIPTION:The Poverty Simulation was developed by the Community Action Group in Missouri USA. Now in use in the Faculty of Health and Medical sciences at the University of Adelaide\, this comprehensive simulation requires students in health programs to consider a range of situations that affect people living in poverty. \nThis is the second year this event has been conducted in time with Anti-Poverty Week. Student participation has grown from 80 students in 2018\, to well over 300 students in 2019. Encouraging graduates of health oriented disciplines to consider how people face the hardships of poverty and ill health is an important goal.

SUMMARY:Education as a Pathway out of Poverty
DESCRIPTION:The Life Course Centre invites you to attend our Anti-Poverty Week 2019 event which will focus on Education as a Pathway out of Poverty. We are delighted to be hosting two international researchers on education and equality – Professor Rebekah Levine Coley of the Lynch School of Education and Human Development at Boston College\, and Dr Matteo Sandi of the London School of Economics and Political Science. \nOur speakers will explore the human development and economics of education\, and its role in addressing social and economic disadvantage and poverty. Their presentations will be followed by a panel discussion and the opportunity for audience questions. \nWe hope you can join us for this event\, which coincides with the United Nations Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Thursday 17 October. This is our key event for Anti-Poverty Week 2019\, running from 13-19 October\, and we are proud to be a sponsor of the week and its efforts to increase awareness and understanding of poverty. \nIn Australia\, more than 3 million people\, or 13.2% of the population\, live below the poverty line\, including 739\,000 or 1 in 6 children growing up in poverty. Anti-Poverty Week encourages us all to acknowledge these facts\, engage in conversations\, raise awareness\, focus on positive solutions\, and take action to end poverty.
