SUMMARY:Hands Across Canberra Annual Charity Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Hands Across Canberra is a true collaboration between the community\, business and government. Our annual lunch gives us the chance to celebrate community organisations who are working to improve the lives of people in Canberra and the region. \nThe lunch provides an opportunity to mix community organisations with business. Our generous table sponsors allow us to offer free seats to two charities for each table. Community organisations are given an opportunity during the lunch to pitch their organisation’s needs to table sponsors. Table sponsors will be invited to complete donation pledge cards during the event.

SUMMARY:Raise the Rate Forum
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speakers:\n+ Hon Jackie Trad MP\, Deputy Premier\, Treasurer and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships\n+ Dr Cassandra Goldie\, CEO Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) \nEvent Details:\nFree event\n10.30am – 12.30pm\nFriday 18 October 2019\nKurilpa Hall\, 174 Boundary Street\, West End Q 4101 \nPlease book your seat via eventbrite: http://raisetherateforum.eventbrite.com.au/ \n… \nIn a wealthy country like Australia\, we should all have enough to put a roof over our head and food on the table. However\, more than three quarters of a million people in communities across Australia live on unemployment and student payments that do not cover the cost of housing\, food\, transport and healthcare.1 \nWhat the Federal Government needs to do:\n• Increase the single rates of Newstart\, Youth Allowance and related payments by $75 per week to reduce poverty and inequality in Australia.\n• Index payments to wages as well as CPI\nto ensure they maintain pace with community living standards.\n• Increase Commonwealth Rent Assistance by 30% or $20 per week for a single person on Newstart. \nThese measures would help people afford food and housing\, reduce homelessness\, destitution and the need for charity. They would improve people’s wellbeing\, security and health. \nRaising the rate would benefit entire communities.

DESCRIPTION:The Poverty Simulation was developed by the Community Action Group in Missouri USA. Now in use in the Faculty of Health and Medical sciences at the University of Adelaide\, this comprehensive simulation requires students in health programs to consider a range of situations that affect people living in poverty. \nThis is the second year this event has been conducted in time with Anti-Poverty Week. Student participation has grown from 80 students in 2018\, to well over 300 students in 2019. Encouraging graduates of health oriented disciplines to consider how people face the hardships of poverty and ill health is an important goal.

SUMMARY:Education as a Pathway out of Poverty
DESCRIPTION:The Life Course Centre invites you to attend our Anti-Poverty Week 2019 event which will focus on Education as a Pathway out of Poverty. We are delighted to be hosting two international researchers on education and equality – Professor Rebekah Levine Coley of the Lynch School of Education and Human Development at Boston College\, and Dr Matteo Sandi of the London School of Economics and Political Science. \nOur speakers will explore the human development and economics of education\, and its role in addressing social and economic disadvantage and poverty. Their presentations will be followed by a panel discussion and the opportunity for audience questions. \nWe hope you can join us for this event\, which coincides with the United Nations Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Thursday 17 October. This is our key event for Anti-Poverty Week 2019\, running from 13-19 October\, and we are proud to be a sponsor of the week and its efforts to increase awareness and understanding of poverty. \nIn Australia\, more than 3 million people\, or 13.2% of the population\, live below the poverty line\, including 739\,000 or 1 in 6 children growing up in poverty. Anti-Poverty Week encourages us all to acknowledge these facts\, engage in conversations\, raise awareness\, focus on positive solutions\, and take action to end poverty.

SUMMARY:Raise the Rate: Port Phillip Community Group
DESCRIPTION:Port Phillip Community Group (PPCG) invites you to our ‘Raise the Rate’ event in conjunction with Anti-Poverty Week. This will be held at 161 Chapel Street\, St Kilda\, VIC\, 3182 on Wednesday 16th October between 12pm – 2pm. \n“The Raise the Rate campaign is key to reducing poverty and inequality in Australia. The goal of the Raise the Rate campaign is for the Federal Government to immediately lift the single rate of Newstart\, Youth Allowance and other related payments by at least $75 per week\, and index Allowances to wages. Currently\, these payments are too low to help people get through tough times and into suitable employment. The rate of Newstart has not been increased for 25 years\, while the cost of living\, especially housing\, has gone through the roof. There is broad support for the campaign\, including from community organisations\, such as anti-poverty networks\, not-for-profit organisations\, unions\, business groups\, local governments\, territory governments and a number of federal parliamentarians. More than 70% of the community agrees the rate of Newstart should be increased (Essential Research 2019).” https://raisetherate.org.au/ \nThe event will include: \nLUNCH\nSPECIAL SPEAKERS\nCOMPUTER CLASS\nACTIVITIES\n& MORE \nWe hope to see you all there!
