SUMMARY:Life Course Centre Seminar Series: How does social position shape health and wealth across the life-course?
DESCRIPTION:There are two broad ‘social facts’ across societies that are usually analysed separately but which are\, in reality\, intimately connected: the inverse association between social and economic position (SEP) and health (known as the ‘social gradient in health‘) and the strong association between family environment and a child’s subsequent educational and occupational attainment (known as the ‘reproduction of social position’). Rather than being separate issues\, these stylised facts actually share a common origin in a process which I term ‘embodiment’ where individual physiology and psychology come to embody socio-structural position. Embodiment shapes individual health and life chances and through this\, forges societal inequalities in health and social position across social groups. Using the work of Pierre Bourdieu and evidence from longitudinal studies from across the life course\, the seminar will explore the mechanisms through which social and economic environment shapes us and the policy implications of this. \nRichard Layte is a Professor of Sociology. Much of his work stems from a core interest in the structure of social and economic stratification in modern societies and its impact on individual life-chances\, health and well-being. His research examines the fundamental processes which influence the distribution of health and well-being in societies and how these are shaped by political economy and the structure and functioning of health care systems. He has a particular interest in improving understanding of how family background influences child health and development and the impact this has on the child’s educational outcomes\, adult health and life expectancy. Recent work has examined whether the ‘Great Recession’ in Ireland had an effect on child health and development (the short answer is that it did in several very important ways)\, the pathways and mechanisms through which these effects occurred and the implications of this for life course models of health and well-being. He has a keen interest in the intersection of social\, psychological and biological science and works with colleagues across a range of disciplines.

SUMMARY:Beyond Prison Walls - Supporting people to thrive on the outside
DESCRIPTION:People exiting the justice system are over-represented in poverty and homelessness statistics\, and as part of Anti-Poverty Week we will explore what more can be done to support people in this situation. \nWhat would it take to provide a ‘softer’ landing for those re-entering society? How can we work together to minimise barriers to employment and housing so that rates of recidivism are reduced? How can we help people exiting prison find their place and become a contributing member of their community? \nJoin us for a panel discussion with representation from people with lived experience and sector expertise to see what’s already in place\, and where the gaps are. \nLight lunch at 12pm\, panel discussion commences at 12.30pm.

SUMMARY:Rosalie Rendu Forum 2022
DESCRIPTION:Climate Justice: working together for a more equitable and sustainable future \nOur climate is changing dramatically. Over the last few years\, our communities have endured more frequent and severe weather events including devastating floods\, droughts\, bushfires and heatwaves. As St Vincent de Paul Society NSW members\, volunteers and staff are on hand to help people in our communities during major emergencies\, and walk alongside people as they recover and rebuild their lives. As each disaster unfolds\, we have seen more clearly how it is marginalised people and communities who are being impacted the most. How then should we respond to the challenges of climate change to avoid widening inequality\, and build resilience amongst those most at risk? \nJoin us for our annual Rosalie Rendu Forum on 20 October 2022 to hear from academic experts and those who’ve lived through recent disasters\, and discuss what’s needed to avoid the worst injustices of climate change\, and better protect those more likely to feel its impact. \nThe 2022 Rosalie Rendu Forum will be held online as a webinar\, however we encourage you to come together within your own communities to hold satellite events across New South Wales. Webinar details will be emailed to registered participants prior to the event. \nTo register\, please visit: https://rosalierendu2022.eventbrite.com.au \nPlease note that by registering for the Rosalie Rendu Form 2022\, you agree to receive updates and information about the St Vincent de Paul Society NSW and our social justice work.

SUMMARY:Poverty & Keeping Children Safe – in conversation with Professor Brigid Featherstone (UK)
DESCRIPTION:Note event runs 3-4pm AEDT\, 2-3pm QLD time \nThis Anti-Poverty Week looks at how poverty impacts the opportunities and outcomes of children and young people. We know that poverty affects far too many Australian children and families\, diminishing their lives now and in the future. As one of the wealthiest countries in the world\, it’s just not right that 1 in 6 of our children grow up in poverty. \nIn this conversation we have Professor Brigid Featherstone\, from the University of Huddersfield\, UK talking about groundbreaking research from the UK and other countries that shows how poverty and inequality impact the context in which child abuse and neglect occurs and how it is responded to by different systems\, including those that are meant to be providing families with support. \nWhat can we learn from the UK and other countries\, to help every child in every community have a fair go? \nMany studies have found that poverty and inequality is a large contributory factor to children being in contact with the child protection system. Professor Featherstone and colleagues say that ‘crucially many of the issues that are dealt with as individualised issues in child protection such as mental health difficulties\, substance misuse difficulties and drug and alcohol problems are all much more prevalent in unequal societies. However\, such socially generated issues are dealt with within an individual frame in child protection. They are reduced to issues of choice\, motivation or character\, which is an inadequate frame.’ \nProfessor Featherstone suggests it is time to tell the important story that: \nThere are inequalities in children’s chances of living safely within their families.\nThese inequalities are directly related to deprivation and other forms of inequality such as in physical and mental health.\nAnti-poverty strategies need to be joined up with child protection strategies locally and nationally.\nThe social determinants of many of the harms experienced by individuals and within families need to be recognised\, understood and tackled.\nSocial and collective strategies need to be integrated with practices directed at individual families.\nTo protect children and promote their welfare we need to focus on the contexts in which they live with their families.\nProfessor Featherstone will also share her knowledge about how Covid-19 has impacted these issues and what are the next steps for children and families.

SUMMARY:Does SA need School provided meals? Let the Citizen's Jury decide...
DESCRIPTION:School provided meals are common internationally to support families experiencing food insecurity and have achieved benefits in student attendance\, academic performance and nutrition. \nHowever\, costs\, lack of infrastructure and potential resistance from stakeholders are barriers to adoption to their introduction in South Australia. \nSA Commissioner for Children and Young People is partnering with Flinders University on a jury style consultation that involves answering the question posed – Does SA need School provided lunches? \nArguments for and against will be presented by “expert witnesses” to a group of “jurors” who will be representing key stakeholders seeking to determine support for or against the idea of school provided meals in SA. \nYou can be part of this event by booking your place via the link below. https://events.humanitix.com/healthy-school-meals-citizens-jury \nThis event is being held in Anti-Poverty Week to encourage an increased understanding of poverty and how to take action collectively to end it.\nNow in its 20th year\, the focus this year is on halving child poverty by 2030 with the theme: Poverty exists. Poverty hurts us all. We can all do something about it.
