Vale Social Justice Legend Merle Mitchell AM

Anti-Poverty Week extends our condolences to the family and friends of Merle Mitchell AM who passed away in Melbourne on 20/9/21.  Former ACOSS staff member and current Executive Director of Anti-Poverty Week, Toni Wren said: “Merle’s combination of quiet but relentless advocacy has been an inspiration to so many. She achieved a great deal at both the local and national level in her fight for a better Australia for us all.”

Merle’s life was celebrated in a memorial service held at 10am 29/9/21.  If you missed it, the video will be available for a number of weeks and you can view it here: Event ID: KewEast Password: S5V4WS.

Merle and Eric’s son and daughter gave a moving eulogy at the service, summing up Merle perfectly with these words: “A lifetime of living and giving to the fullest.”  In lieu of flowers Merle and her family have requested donations to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC).  You can donate to ASRC here.
